SAMA broken up into 4 Programs:

  • 1. Assisting process
  • 2. Protection Skills
  • 3. Containment
  • 4. Object Removal

*Each Program must be taught in sequence, but not everyone needs to go through all four programs; that is up to your organization’s discretion of what your staff needs.*

The “Assisting Process” is a logical, sequential format that leads from the reactive part to the reasoning part of the brain.
  • What do you say to a person that wants to hit someone? Well, we don’t want to get them more upset; if we don't find out what prompted the behavior, it will re-occur.
  • It’s more than good customer service; it's risk management. If we help people get their needs met, then they don’t want to beat us up.
  • Who does the Assisting Process apply to? Anyone on the planet who is in a relationship with another person!
  • Can be adapted to every client population.
  • The program is not psychotherapy or behavior therapy - what it is, is Crisis Intervention!

Five Basic Principles applied in every aspect of SAMA
  • can be applied to situations not specifically covered
  1. Take the person seriously (listen, let them know you’re there for them)
  2. Join. Follow. Lead. (Have to find out where they want to go, then lead)
  3. Take action to get a beneficial reaction (Calmly)
  4. Proceed step by step.
  5. Act without hesitation. (react quickly)

Personal Effects of Anger:
  • What your body does when it’s angry
  • What is going through your mind
  • How to get out of the reactive state into help mode

Anger - What drives it?
  • Fear
  • Lack of sense of power

CAR Approach:
  1. Calm - approach calmly and friendly
  2. Aware - be aware of your surroundings (safety)
  3. Respectful - respect the person, despite their behavior

Join, Follow, Lead: (the assisting process)
  • I see you (behavior)
  • Are you (angry, upset, sad)
  • What are you feeling if we guess wrong
  • I can see your angry (acknowledge)
  • What are you angry about
  • What do you want
  • What have you tried
  • How well has that worked
  • What are you willing to try
  • When, where, and how would you do that
  • Will you let me know how that works out
